Copenhagen Ice Bear For COP 15

Sculptor Mark Coreth carved a life-size ice sculpture of a polar bear in Nytorv Square, Copenhagen on December the 5th.

People are able to reach out and touch the Ice Bear and over a few days, it will melt, leaving a bronze skeleton, a pool of water. Coreth who had visited the Artic, wanted to make a sculpture to show world the desperation of the plight of the Polar bear since effects of climate change had threatened environment in general and the Polar Bear particularly.

The habitat of the bear ,the summer sea ice cover in the Artic Ocean has both shrunk and thinned by 45% since the 1970 , losing 70% of its former volume and projected to disapperar completly in less than 30 years due to global warming.

The whole idea of a melting bear is a powerful environmental message symbolic of how we all have the power to affect our delicate environment. It is part of the WWf Artic Tent on Nytorv Square for the United Nation Climate Change Conference 2009.
