Grape and apple juices are great for our health, wright? Well, wrong!

Consumer Reports conducted an investigation on arsenic levels which showed that ten percent of their samples exceeded 10 parts per billion (ppb) — the federal arsenic limit for bottled water.

There were tested 88 samples from 28 apple and three grape juices from various lots numbers that were packaged in various ways, such as ready-to-drink bottles, concentrate and juice boxes.
Previous research has shown that chronic exposure to arsenic and lead, even below the levels allowed for bottled water, can result in serious health problems. Now, the question is why The Food and Drug Administration has not announced a threshold levels for these elements in juices, as it did for water. After all, children of ages five and younger drink juice in quantities exceeding recommendations.

“People often ask me why more people do not die from arsenic, if the exposure is so harmful. I try to explain that in most cases even at the relatively low levels of exposure many diseases are likely to be increased because no one had thought to link these two things” says Ph.D. toxicologist, Joshua Hamilton .

Consumers Union requested from the FDA to set a standard for total arsenic and lead in apple and grape juice. In numbers, the standard should be three ppb for arsenic and five ppb for lead, which is set as standard for the bottled water.

There really are homemade beauty treatments that can help us and they are just a hand away.

But do all those remedies help us or are they just a bunch of baloney, continue to read and find out.

Does urine therapy help to clear up acne?

No, it doesn’t. Urine doesn’t have any antibacterial or anti-inflammatory agents. Directly from the bladder it is normally sterile. However, on its passage from the bladder to the outside world, urine becomes contaminated by bacteria normally present in the lower urethra and external genitalia. It is not an antiseptic. It will not kill infection or even fungus.

Does lemon juice make your hair brighter?

Yes it does. Lemon juice will lighten your hair if you expose yourself to sunlight. Then the sun’s UV rays will make your hair lighter.

Does tannin from black tea help with the sunburns?

Yes it does. A combination of the cool water and components of the tea (tannin) help soothe the skin and speed recovery.

Healthy nails

For healthy and stronger nails apply olive oil once a week.

Can we use olive oil for a hair growth?

No. Olive oil nourishes, conditions, and improves the strength and elasticity of your hair, but it doesn’t make it grow.

Can we use peppers for a hair growth?

Well, we do not know. Cayenne pepper has been used as a home remedie for all kinds of treatments, but we haven’t seen a study that supports this statement.

Is the hemorrhoid cream cure for puffy eyes?

Hemorrhoid cream causes the blood vessels to constrict, and the skin to tighten up. This chases the extra fluid build up out from under than delicate skin under your eyes, reducing the puffiness. But this is only a temporary fix.

Can we use mayo as a conditioner?

Well, we could. Fat and oils in mayonnaise condition damaged hair follicles, but with all that smell does it make any sense?

Do potatoes clear pimples and acne?

No they don’t. They have none of the ingredients needed to interact with them.

Does toothpaste clear pimples and acne?

The ingredients in toothpaste (menthol or alcohol) tend to dry your skin, which clears up the acne if left on the skin for a period of time. Look for a true toothpaste, not a gel. Remember, this is a temporary fix.

But there really are homemade beauty treatments that can help us and they are just a hand away.

In fact, some celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones believe in those stories. But are they true? If you ask her, they are. She polishes her teeth with strawberry chunks and she keeps her hair shiny using castor oil.

Model and actress Yana Gupta doesn’t believe in any kind of soap, so she uses coconut paste.

It’s a known fact that caffeine increases circulation and reduces cellulite.

Like every Friday night, a couple of my friends and I gather around and we play football (soccer) in a local sports center.

A little digression…I do not know why American football is called “foot”ball when you rarely use your feet to play this game. While in European football, your feet are main tools. And yet, this is called soccer. Go figure

To get back on the topic…friend, who works for one big cosmetic company brought a big box of aftershaves. It was like a 100 of them.

When we asked him, how come he is giving us a fortune in cosmetics, he answered: those are expired aftershaves. After that, no one dared to take one. Like it will poison them. Well, knowing a bit of chemistry I didn’t understand their fear. I mean, aftershave is nothing but a whole lot of alcohol and a bit of fragrance, which is actually some kind of an oil.

So the main question is, can alcohol or oil go bad? And if they do, what harm can they do to you?

Luckily, aftershave has a low concentration of fragrance. It’s mostly alcohol. In out of date after shave, the alcohol will preserve the fragrance for ages but the more air is in the bottle (the more it is empty) the more the fragrance might diminish.

So, over time, the fragrant oils will break down, and that process will be accelerated if the bottle is not stored in a cool and dark place, away from sunlight and heat. Colognes and perfumes, which contain more fragrance, will break down faster than aftershave.

Can We Use Expired Aftershave? Basically YES, aftershave should be discarded only when it no longer has the fragrance that you desire.

“I can tell you the license plate numbers of all six cars outside. I can tell you that our waitress is left-handed and the guy sitting up at the counter weighs two hundred and fifteen pounds and knows how to handle himself. I know the best place to look for a gun is the cab of the gray truck outside, and at this altitude, I can run flat out for a half mile before my hands start shaking. Now why would I know that? How can I know that and not know who I am?” This is a famous quote from a movie The Bourne Identity.

If you haven’t seen this movie, you saw some other spy flick where the main character remembers random stuff as he goes through places. Now, you could say, OK this is a movie, people even fly in movies, so this can’t be true. But, actually, you could train your brain to do stuff like Jason Bourne did in that movie.

Brain is like a muscle, it gets better and faster if you train it. But, if you don’t use it for solving complicated and logical problems, it can fail you when you at least expect it.

Brain exercises are meant to awaken the neuroplasticity that helps to improve cognitive abilities, increase your brain power and generally perfect your brain.

You’ll get faster and clearer thinking, improved memory, increased awareness and alertness, elevated mood and better concentration.

The Switch

This is an exercise that can strengthen neural connections and even create new ones.

Switch the hand you are using to control the computer mouse. Use the hand you normally do NOT use.

What do you notice?

Is it harder to be precise and accurate with your motions?

Do you feel like you did when you were first learning to tie your shoelaces?

If you are feeling uncomfortable and awkward don’t worry, your brain is learning a new skill.

Try other neural building and strengthening exercises with everyday movements. Use your opposite hand to brush your teeth, dial the phone or operate the TV remote.

Just By Thinking About It

In a fascinating experiment, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation discovered that a muscle can be strengthened just by thinking about exercising it.

For 12 weeks (five minutes a day, five days per week) a team of 30 healthy young adults imagined either using the muscle of their little finger or of their elbow flexor. Dr. Vinoth Ranganathan and his team asked the participants to think as strongly as they could about moving the muscle being tested, to make the imaginary movement as real as they could.

Compared to a control group – that did no imaginary exercises and showed no strength gains – the little-finger group increased their pinky muscle strength by 35%. The other group increased elbow strength by 13.4%.

What’s more, brain scans taken after the study showed greater and more focused activity in the prefrontal cortex than before. The researchers said strength gains were due to improvements in the brain’s ability to signal muscle.3

Pay attention to your breathing. Is it slow and deep, or quick and shallow? Is your belly expanding and contracting, or is your chest doing all the work?

Challenge Your Brain

It is important to challenge your brain to learn new and novel tasks, especially processes that you’ve never done before. Examples include square-dancing, chess, tai chi, yoga, or sculpture. Working with modeling clay or play dough is an especially good way for children to grow new connections. It helps develop agility and hand-brain coordination, (like controlling the computer mouse with your opposite hand).

Travel

Travel is another good way to stimulate your brain. It worked for our ancestors, the early Homo sapiens. Their nomadic lifestyle provided a tremendous stimulation for their brains that led to the development of superior tools and survival skills. In comparison, the now-extinct Neanderthal was a species that for thousands of years apparently did not venture too far from their homes. (Maybe they were simply content with their lives – in contrast to the seldom-satisfied sapien.)

Early humans gained a crucial evolutionary edge from the flexibility and innovation required by their strategic lifestyle, which also led to a more diverse diet that allowed their brains to rapidly evolve.

Neurobics – Brain Aerobics

Neurobics is a unique system of brain exercises using your five physical senses and your emotional sense in unexpected ways that encourage you to shake up your everyday routines. They are designed to help your brain manufacture its own nutrients that strengthen, preserve, and grow brain cells.

Created by Lawrence C. Katz, Ph.D., a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, neurobics can be done anywhere, anytime, in offbeat, fun and easy ways. Nevertheless, these exercises can activate underused nerve pathways and connections, helping you achieve a fit and flexible mind.

Get dressed with your eyes closed.
Wash your hair with your eyes closed.
Share a meal and use only visual cues to communicate. No talking.

Combine two senses:
Listen to music and smell flowers.
Listen to the rain and tap your fingers.
Watch clouds and play with modeling clay at the same time.

Break routines:
Go to work on a new route.
Eat with your opposite hand.
Shop at new grocery store.

Stimulate That Brain

Consider your brain a muscle, and find opportunities to flex it. “Read, read, read,” says Dr. Amir Soas of Case Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland. Do crossword puzzles. Play Scrabble. Start a new hobby or learn to speak a foreign language. “Anything that stimulates the brain to think.” Also, watch less television, because “your brain goes into neutral,” he said.

Challenging the brain early in life is crucial to building up more “cognitive reserve” to counter brain-damaging disease, according to Dr. David Bennett of Chicago’s Rush University. And, reading-habits prior to age 18 are a key predictor of later cognitive function.

A cognitive psychologist in England found that when elderly people regularly played bingo, it helped minimize their memory loss and bolster their hand-eye coordination. Bingo seemed to help players of all ages remain mentally sharp.

Cows were implanted with cloned human genes which were added to the cow embryos. Technology used was similar to the one used to produce sheep Dolly, first cloned animal.

Scientists say that this kind of milk is better for the babies. “The milk produced by the trans genic cows is identical to the human variety and has the same immune-boosting and antibacterial qualities as breast milk”. Also, it has a higher nutritional level and less fat.

Professor Li Ning, director of the research project, says: “There are 1.5 billion people in the world who don’t get enough to eat, it’s our duty to develop science and technology, not to hold it back”.

The links between meat and climate change have been well-known for several years. A UN study in 2006 showed that the livestock industry was responsible for a staggering 18% of man’s global greenhouse gas emissions.

Meatout is another campaign, started in 1985. to become the world’s largest annual grassroots diet education campaign.

You don’t have to live on tofu – Tofu is a protein-packed tasty and versatile ingredient in your vegetarian arsenal, but it’s not the only thing on the menu. In fact, there are several yummy options for getting your protein needs met, including veggie burgers, quinoa, and a whole parade of legumes to choose from.

The purpose is to expose the public to the joys and benefits of a plant-based diet, while promoting the availability and selection alternatives to meat and dairy in mainstream grocery stores, restaurants, and catering operations.

It is impossible to belive when you hear what animal products that we presume are thrown away, are actually used to make certain food. Animal’s feet, skin, bones, blood, eyes, hair…are used to make processed food like candy, snacks, ice-cream, forzen meals.

No matter where you stand on the animal exploitation meter, you might want to know that blood from slaughtered animals is used as adhesive in plywood, or that the keratin in your shampoo comes from ground-up horns, hoofs, feathers, quills, and hair of various creatures.

Gelatin

Gelatin is prepared using animal bones, skin, hooves, claws, etc. Gelatin is not vegan, not vegetarian, and definitely not necessary. A natural gelatin replacement is agar also known as kanten.

Where is gelatin hidden?
Gel caps (vitamins), yogurt, cereals, marshmallows, cakes, ice cream and some candies. Also in shampoos, face masks, and other cosmetics.

Carmine

It takes 70,000 beetles to make one pound of marketable carmine. This insect version of the slaughterhouse is not only non vegan, it’s a potential health hazard. Allergies to carmine can be severe. If you prefer your candy didn’t contain crushed beetles, look for some bug-free sweets.

Where is the carmine hidden?
Fruit drinks, sauces, bottled cherries, fabric and cosmetics dye, oil paints, pigments, and watercolors.

Rennet

It’s an enzyme that comes from the stomach of calves and is used most commonly in the manufacture of cheeses. Bad news for chocoholics came recently when the manufacturer of some very popular chocolate bars announced they were beginning to use animal rennet in their products.

Where is the rennet hidden?
Cheese and chocolate.

Here is the complete list of products to watch out for:

A:

ACETATE: Retinol. Vitamin A. Palmitate (see Palmitic Acid). An aliphatic alcohol. Can come from fish liver oil (ie. shark liver oil), egg yolks, butter, lemongrass, wheat germ oil, carotene in carrots, etc., synthetics. In cosmetics, creams, perfumes, hair dyes, vitamins, supplements.

Acetylated Hydrogenated Lard Glyceride

Acetylated Lanolin

Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol

Acetylated Lanolin Ricinoleate

Acetylated Tallow

ADRENALINE: From the adrenals of hogs, cattle and sheep. In medicines. Alternatives: synthetics

AFTERBIRTH: Placenta. Placenta Polypeptides Protein. Contains waste matter eliminated by the fetus. Derived from the uterus of slaughtered animals. Animal placenta is widely used in skin creams, shampoos, masks, etc. Doesn’t remove wrinkles. Alternatives: kelp, vegetable oils.

ALBUMEN: Egg Albumen. Albumin. In eggs, milk, muscles, blood and in many vegetable tissues and fluids. In cosmetics, albumen is usually derived from egg whites. May cause allergic reactions. In cakes, cookies, candies, other foods. Egg whites sometimes used in “clearing” wines.

ALBUMIN: See Albumen.

ALIPHATIC ALCOHOL: See Acetate.

ALLANTOIN: A uric acid from cows, most mammals. Also in many plants (especially comfrey). In cosmetics, especially creams & lotions, and used in the treatment of wounds and skin ulcers.

AMBERGRIS: From sperm whale intestines. Used as a fixative in perfumes and as a flavoring in foods and beverages. (US regulations currently prohibit the use of ingredients derived from marine mammals.) Alternatives: synthetic and vegetable fixatives.

Amerachol”

Aminiuccinate Acid; DL and L Forms

AMINO ACIDS: Animal or plant sources. In cosmetics, vitamins, supplements, shampoos, etc.

AMINOSUCCINATE ACID: DL and L forms. Aspartic Acid. Can be animal or plant (ie. molasses) source. Is a nonessential amino acid. In creams and ointments. Sometimes synthesized for commercial purposes.

Ammonium Hydrolyzed Protein

Amniotic Fluid

AMPD Isoteric Hydrolyzed Animal Protein

AMYLASE: An enzyme prepared from the pancreas of hogs. In cosmetics and Inedicines.

ANIMAL BONES: Bone Meal. In some fertilizers, some vitamins and supplements as a source of calcium, also in toothpastes. Alternatives: plant mulch, vegetable compost, dolomite, clay, vegetarian vitamins.

Animal Collagen Amino Acids

Animal Keratin Amino Acids

ANIMAL OILS AND FATS: In foods, cosmetics, etc. Highly allergenic. Plant derivatives are superior. Alternatives: olive oil, wheat germ oil, coconut oil, almond oil, safflower oil, etc.

Animal Protein Derivative

Animal Tissue Extract – Epiderm Oil R

ARACHIDONIC ACID: A liquid unsaturated fatty acid occurring in the liver, brain, glands, and fat of animals. Generally isolated from the liver. In skin creams and lotions to soothe eczema and rashes.

Artificial Colors: Some artificial colors are made with animal ingredients. cochineal is used to make some red dyes. See Carmine.

ASPARTIC ACID: See Aminosuccinate Acid.

ASPIC: An industry alternative for gelatin. Is made from clarified meat, fish or vegetable stocks and gelatin.

B:

Batyl Alcohol

Batyl Isostearate

BEE POLLEN: Collected from the legs of bees. Causes allergic reactions in some people. In supplements, shampoos, toothpastes, deodorants. Too concentrated for human use.

Are You trying to eliminate meat from your diet? Here are the few steps that can help you ease the transition in becoming a vegetarian.

First humans that walk the Earth were in fact vegetarians. They would pick fruits from trees, eat berries, and do a little farming. Later on, we started to hunt for feeding and clothing purposes.

On East, i.e., India, it is embedded in their culture to be vegetarians. In Europe, Pythagoras, Greek philosopher, was promoting vegetarian lifestyle, not only for moral reasons, but for health as well. He was one of the most known Greek mathematicians. First vegetarian society was created in Europe in 19th century.

Cutting off meat is not easy. Specially if you are addicted on junk food. Western Society is based on meat and meat products. In fact, meat is not only in steaks and burgers we eat. Meat is found in candies, cosmetics and clothes we carry. Eliminating meat has to be gradually. Try to reduce meat day by day, each day less and less. It will not be easy, but it is necessary for your health.

While you are eliminating meat, try to substitute it with fresh vegetables and grains. Each day, try to eat less and less meat and more and more vegetables. Fresh if you can.

Try to watch what you eat. Although you are eliminating meat, it doesn’t mean that you should eliminate proteins. Beans, seeds, grains, nuts and some other vegetables are great sources of proteins. Also, you can use a soy-based protein powder, combined with fruit and soy milk, to make a delicious shake or smoothie. There is a wide range of soy products out there, so you do not need to settle for a plain block of tofu.

Although there is no mandate to give up dairy or eggs if you are giving up meat, do what feels right for you. If you think that you are eating same food all the time, mix in these products. But if you go meatless for a while, and want to try to go a little further (in terms of health, the environment, and helping animal suffering), consider these foods. For one thing, they are often high in saturated fat, especially compared to soy alternatives.

Explore with new recipes. You do not have to eat fresh or cooked vegetables, only. If you like pizza, we have one delicious recipe for you. Also, if you like lasagnas… vegetarian lasagnas are one of my favorite meals. I liked them even when I ate meat. It is a light, tasty and healthy (up to a point) meal. You do not even have to have some special recipe. Be creative and prepare it with vegetables you like.

Visit local grocery store. Take your time exploring the shelves and do not be afraid to pick new things up to examine them further. Also ask a grocer for recommendations regarding an imitation meat. Just remember to be open to trying new things. Eventually you will find things you love.

And remember, you are not only doing this for your health, but for the health of your children, and not to mention the hygiene conditions and the torture your food is getting.
