Helpful Green Tips From Our Celebs
From cooking to driving, find out which of your favorite celebrities are suggesting more than a little weird, yet helpful tips to lead a greener lifestyle.
Grammy Award-winning musician Ludacris jokes around and shares a tip to save water while using the bathroom. He suggests taking shorter showers to save water and turning off the water while brushing your pearly whites. He then goes on to say, “Help conserve a lot of water by taking a group shower–ya’ know–shower with a friend.” Sharing water is indeed caring, but if your friend is a actually a loved one and the shower session turns steamy, we suggest keeping it short or bringing it to the bedroom.
Alicia Silverstone tells us very often what are the benefits of her vegan diet. She says, “Eating vegan is more sustainable…I’ve been doing this for 11 years, and I get plenty of protein from lentil soup, hummus, beans.” And when the conversation turnes to, er, the resulting gas issue, Alicia served up a recipe to avoid the smelly afterthought: “Soak the beans overnight, and then cook them with a small piece of kombu, a Japanese seaweed. When you bring the beans to a boil, remove all the white foam at the top–that should remove all the gas.” Alicia’s tip not only helps us save face amongst lovers, roommates, and friends, it applies to cow farts too, a leading source greenhouse gas emissions.
Woody Harrelson shared a story with Hustler, on how he gave up dairy all together in his mid-twenties for a vegan diet. Twinkies were his favorite indulgence. He says, “When I was 23, 24, I used to have a really bad runny nose, mucus, tons of acne, reddishness all over. A woman on a bus I took looked at me and said I was lactose intolerant.” Three days later, his symptoms were gone. If milk, cheese, or other dairy products give you the willies try an alternative like almond, rice, hemp, or soy milk.
“My car loves to drink vegetable oil, especially if it’s from waste,” says actress Daryl Hannah. Maybe this quote came out a bit strange, but either way, we love her promotion of sustainably-sourced biodiesel. The ever passionate activist and proponent for sustainable fuels and transport, Daryl Hannah refers to biodiesel made from waste vegetable oil, often collected from restaurants.
“There was a time when we used to sacrifice goats, but then we all became vegans, so we’ve been sacrificing tofu before the shows!” While the goat sacrificing business is likely bogus, we are encouraged by Leto embracing the vegan lifestyle and ridding himself of the former habit. While we’re not ones to encourage waste we are glad that Jared Leto no longer disposes of goats while touring the country.
