Swiss freediver Peter Colat, 38, has broken the world record for holding his breath underwater – for 19 minutes and 21 seconds.

The previous Guinness World Record for oxygen-assisted static apnea was 19 seconds shorter and was set by an Italian, Nicola Putignano, last May.

“The first 12 minutes without air were ‘no problem’”, he says, “I felt the first need to breathe very late, but because of this it was even stronger.”

Under the Guinness rules, Mr Colat was allowed to breath pure oxygen for ten minutes before the feat.

People from British Freediving Association tell us that participants must ‘enter a very relaxed state so as to minimise oxygen consumption.’

Although this sport looks harmless, it isn’t, cause participants can overrate their body and blackout, and that is not a good thing when you are down under.
